How to Configure Exclusive Mode in Tidal and Qobuz for Desktop DACs

For audiophiles and music enthusiasts, achieving the highest possible sound quality from a desktop setup is a continuous pursuit. While investing in premium digital-to-analog converters (DACs) and high-end headphones is critical, software configuration plays an equally vital role. By default, standard operating systems like Windows and macOS are not optimized for high-fidelity audio playback. They mix sounds from all running applications—including web browsers, system notifications, and game audio—into a single stream. To achieve this, the operating system resamples all audio to a fixed sample rate, which degrades audio quality. The solution to this bottleneck is Exclusive Mode, which enables bit-perfect audio delivery by bypassing the operating system’s audio mixer.

This enables “bit-perfect” playback: the digital file is sent to the DAC completely unaltered, and the DAC automatically adjusts its internal clock and sample rate to match the source file. How to Configure Exclusive Mode in Tidal

Tidal’s desktop application on Windows and macOS supports Exclusive Mode natively. To configure it correctly for your desktop DAC, follow these steps:

  • Launch the Tidal Desktop App: Open the application on your computer. Make sure you are using the desktop application, as web browsers do not support Exclusive Mode.
  • Navigate to Settings: Click on the three horizontal dots (…) in the top-left corner of the interface, select “Settings,” and then click on the “Streaming” tab.
  • Locate Sound Output: Scroll down to the “Sound” section. Here, you will see a list of available sound output devices. Find your desktop DAC in this list.
  • Access Device Settings: Hover your mouse over the name of your DAC. A gear icon representing settings will appear on the right side. Click this icon.
